Backed by a licensed bank
Coop Remit is built and run by Cooperative Bank of Oromia S.C., regulated by the National Bank of Ethiopia.
Paid out across Ethiopia
29 banks and mobile wallets, from Cooperative Bank of Oromia and CBE to telebirr, CBE Birr and M-PESA.
Support in your language
English, Amharic and Afaan Oromoo, in the app and over email — every day of the week.
Disappoint thieves
Your card details never touch our servers. Apple Pay and Google Pay hand us a one-time token, card payments run through CyberSource with 3-D Secure, and getting into the app takes your PIN or your face.
Every transfer is checked before it moves, and if one cannot be completed the money goes back to the card it came from.
How we keep your money safeFour steps, and the money is home
Verify once
A passport, national ID or residence card, and a few details about you. One check — every transfer after it goes straight through.
Choose who gets it
Their account number at any of 29 Ethiopian banks and wallets. We check the name on the account before you commit.
See the rate, then pay
The live rate, the fee and the birr your recipient receives — all on one screen. Pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card.
It lands in minutes
You get a receipt straight away and can follow the transfer to the moment it settles in their account.
Wherever they bank, we pay out
29 Ethiopian banks and mobile wallets. Send to a Cooperative Bank of Oromia account and our exclusive rate adds birr on top of the standard rate, for every dollar.
Pay the way you already do
Wallet payments are quickest — your card details are replaced with a one-time token before they ever reach us. Card payments go through CyberSource, the same processor used by the bank.
Your billing address has to match the one on your card, or your bank can decline the payment. The app checks this for you before you pay.
Apple Pay
One touch, and your card number never leaves your iPhone.
Google Pay
Pay with the card already in your Google Wallet.
Visa
Any Visa debit or credit card, with 3-D Secure where your bank asks for it.
Mastercard
Any Mastercard debit or credit card, checked the same way.
Questions people ask
Still stuck? Email support@coopremit.com and a person will answer. Never share your PIN, OTP or full card number by email — we will never ask for them.
How long does a transfer take?
Most transfers land within minutes. Payments into a Cooperative Bank of Oromia account are usually the fastest; other banks and wallets settle on their own clearing schedule, and a transfer sent outside Ethiopian banking hours can land the next working morning.
What does it cost?
Today, nothing beyond the amount you are sending — Coop Remit charges no transfer fee. The exchange rate you are quoted is the rate you get, and there is no second fee taken at the other end, so the birr figure you see is the birr your recipient receives. Any fee that ever applies is shown in full on the confirmation screen before you pay.
How can I pay?
Apple Pay, Google Pay, or any Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card. Wallet payments are the quickest route because the card details never leave your device.
Who can receive money?
Anyone with an account at one of 29 Ethiopian banks and wallets, including Cooperative Bank of Oromia, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Awash, Dashen, telebirr, CBE Birr and M-PESA. You need their account number and the name on the account.
Why do I have to verify my identity?
We gather a few details to verify your identity and comply with regulatory requirements. It is one ID check — a passport, national ID or residence card — and every transfer after it goes through without repeating it. Your information is kept confidential and is never shared with third parties.
What is the Coop exclusive rate?
When the money lands in a Cooperative Bank of Oromia account, we add birr on top of the standard rate for every dollar you send. The app shows the uplift on the amount screen before you commit to anything.
